What are half highlights?
Half head highlights (also called partial highlights) focus lightening on specific zones — usually the top layers, the crown, and around the face — while the lower layers stay untouched. The result is visible brightness where it matters most, with natural depth preserved underneath.
Because fewer foils are placed, half highlights take less time, cost less, and cause less chemical stress than a full head. They also grow out more gracefully: since the regrowth line is concentrated on the top layers where it blends with your parting, the contrast is softer and less obvious over time.
Popular half highlight placements
Half highlights aren't one-size-fits-all. Your stylist customises foil placement based on your goals, face shape, and how your hair falls. These are the most requested placements at our Orchard salon.
- Face framing highlights — Light pieces concentrated around the hairline, temples, and jawline. These brighten the face, add softness to the features, and look natural even as they grow out. Our most popular half highlight style.
- Money piece — Two bold, chunky face-framing highlights flanking the parting. More contrast than subtle face framing — a statement look that catches light around the face.
- Crown highlights — Foils placed through the top section and crown only. Adds visible brightness when your hair is down, while keeping the sides and underneath dark for depth.
- Parting highlights — Fine foils placed along and around your natural part. Subtle but effective — the lightened pieces show exactly where the eye falls first.
Half highlights vs full highlights
The right choice depends on how much lift you want and how often you're willing to maintain it.
- Half highlights — Fewer foils (typically 15–25), focused on visible areas. Takes 1.5–2 hours. Lower cost, less chemical processing, and softer regrowth. Ideal for first-time highlights, subtle dimension, or low-maintenance colour.
- Full highlights — Foils throughout the entire head including underneath layers. Takes 2.5–3.5 hours. More dramatic lift and all-over brightness. Best if you want a noticeably lighter overall look.
Half highlights on Asian hair
Asian hair is thicker and darker, so it needs a specific approach to lighten cleanly.
Our Korean stylists account for this by using gentler products and longer processing times for even, clean results. After lightening, a toner neutralises the warm undertones (orange, copper) that Asian hair naturally reveals, landing on clean ash, beige, or cool brown tones instead.
Half highlights are particularly effective on dark Asian hair because the contrast between lightened pieces and your natural base creates visible dimension — even a few well-placed foils make a significant difference when you're starting from a uniform dark base.
What to expect during your appointment
A half highlights appointment at Miin follows the same precision process as our full highlight service, with fewer foils and shorter timing.
- Consultation — Your stylist discusses your goals, examines your hair condition and colour history, and maps out foil placement. Bring reference photos if you have them.
- Sectioning and foiling — Selected sections are isolated and lightener is applied, each wrapped in foil. Placement is tailored to your cut, parting, and face shape.
- Processing — Lightener develops under controlled timing. Your stylist checks progress at intervals to ensure even lift.
- Toning — After the lightener is rinsed, a toner refines the final shade — neutralising warmth and achieving your target tone.
- Treatment and styling — A post-colour treatment restores moisture and locks in shine. Your stylist blow-dries and styles the finished result.
Maintenance and grow-out
One of the biggest advantages of half highlights is the gentle grow-out. Because the foils are concentrated on top layers and the face frame, regrowth blends with your natural hair more gradually than full highlights.
Expect to refresh every 10–12 weeks, compared to 6–8 weeks for full highlights. Some clients stretch to 14 weeks with face-framing placements because the soft transition suits the grown-out look.
Between appointments, use colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo to preserve tone. A Miin Express treatment or Miin Signature treatment every 4–6 weeks keeps lightened sections in healthy condition.
What pairs well with half highlights?
