What are highlights?
Highlights use foils to isolate thin sections of hair and lighten them individually. The result is multi-tonal dimension — lighter pieces woven through your base colour — that catches light and creates natural movement.
Unlike single-process colour that changes everything at once, highlights let you control exactly where lightness falls. This is why they work so well for Asian hair, which tends to be uniformly dark: strategically placed highlights break up density and add visual texture without looking unnatural.
At Miin, our Korean stylists take a precision approach to hair highlights. Each foil is placed to complement your cut, face shape, and how your hair falls naturally. The goal is colour that looks intentional but effortless.
Highlight styles we offer
We tailor every highlight service to your goals. These are the most popular styles at our Orchard salon.
- Full highlights — Foils placed throughout the head for an all-over lifted, multi-dimensional look. Best if you want a noticeably lighter overall appearance.
- Partial highlights — Foils concentrated on the top layers and around the face. Great for adding brightness while keeping depth underneath.
- Face framing highlights — Light pieces focused around the hairline and temples to open up the face. Subtle, flattering, and low-maintenance with soft grow-out.
- Babylights — Very fine, closely spaced foils that mimic the natural sun-lightened effect of children's hair. Babylights in Singapore are popular for clients wanting dimension without obvious streaks.
- Korean highlights — A technique our stylists bring from Seoul: softer transitions between tones, typically using ash or beige palettes. Designed for Asian hair textures and warm skin tones.
Highlights on Asian hair: what to know
Asian hair is thicker and darker, which means it needs a different approach to lighten cleanly.
Our stylists are trained specifically in highlights for Asian hair. The result is highlights that look soft and natural rather than streaky or orange — a common problem when generic techniques are applied to dark Asian hair.
- Gentle, controlled lightening for even results
- Toning to remove brassiness and land on your target shade
- Precise foil placement tailored to how your hair falls
Highlights vs balayage: which is right for you?
Both create multi-tonal dimension, but the technique and result differ.
- Highlights use foils for precise, even lightening with clean lines. Better for structured dimension and more noticeable lift.
- Balayage is hand-painted freehand onto the hair surface for a softer, more graduated effect. Better for a natural, sun-kissed gradient.
What to expect during your appointment
A highlights appointment at Miin follows a structured process to ensure precise placement and even results.
- Consultation — Your stylist discusses your goals, examines your hair history and current condition, and maps out foil placement. This is where you'll decide on style, density, and tone.
- Sectioning and foiling — Hair is sectioned precisely and lightener is applied to selected strands, each wrapped in foil. The number of foils depends on whether you're getting partial or full highlights.
- Processing — Lightener develops under controlled timing. Your stylist checks progress to ensure even lift without over-processing.
- Toning — After lightener is rinsed, a toner is applied to refine the final shade — neutralising warmth and achieving the exact tone discussed in consultation.
- Treatment and styling — A post-colour treatment restores moisture and locks in shine. Your stylist blow-dries and styles the finished result.
How often do highlights need maintenance?
Foil highlights typically need a refresh every 8–12 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows and how visible the regrowth contrast is.
Face framing highlights and babylights tend to grow out more gracefully because the placement is softer and the sections finer. Full highlights with high contrast may show regrowth sooner.
Between appointments, use colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo to preserve tone and prevent brassiness. A Miin Express treatment every 4–6 weeks helps maintain the condition of lightened hair.
Can I combine highlights with other services?
Yes. Highlights pair well with several services at Miin.
- Highlights + haircut — Your stylist can cut and highlight in the same session, tailoring foil placement to your new shape.
- Highlights + Miin Express treatment — Recommended after any lightening service to rebuild strength and restore shine.
- Highlights + toner refresh — Between full highlight sessions, a toner-only visit can refresh your shade and neutralise any brassiness.
