What is hair rebonding?
Rebonding is a chemical straightening treatment that permanently changes your hair’s natural texture to make it straight. Once treated, the hair stays straight from the point of treatment.
The result is pin-straight, frizz-free hair that stays sleek regardless of humidity — a significant advantage in Singapore’s climate. Unlike temporary smoothing treatments, rebonding is permanent on the treated sections of hair.
At Miin, our stylists use Korean rebonding methods that prioritise hair health. As a rebonding salon, we use gentler formulations, protective base coats, and careful timing throughout the process. The result is straight hair that stays soft and healthy — not the brittle, lifeless texture that older techniques sometimes produce. If you want straight hair but are concerned about looking too flat, ask about volume rebonding — sometimes called soft rebonding — which preserves natural root lift and a softer finish.
Rebonding vs keratin treatment
This is the most common rebonding vs keratin question we get. Both fight frizz, but they work very differently.
- Rebonding — permanently straightens hair for a pin-straight finish. Lasts 6–12 months (until it grows out). Best for healthy, thick, or unmanageable hair that you want straight long-term.
- Keratin treatment — coats hair with protein to smooth frizz while keeping some natural movement. Lasts 2–4 months. Best for frizzy hair that doesn’t need to be fully straight. Because keratin strengthens rather than permanently alters the hair, it’s also the better choice if your hair is damaged or has recently undergone chemical treatment — rebonding adds chemical stress, while keratin helps repair it.
What to expect during your appointment
Rebonding is a longer appointment than most salon services, but the results are permanent. Here’s what the process looks like at Miin.
- Consultation (15 min) — Your stylist examines your hair’s type, condition, and damage history. If your hair has been heavily bleached or is very damaged, we may recommend a treatment course first or suggest keratin as a gentler alternative.
- Preparation — Hair is washed and a scalp protector is applied to shield the scalp and minimise irritation.
- Softening solution (30–45 min) — A softening cream is applied to relax your hair’s natural texture. Timing is monitored carefully based on your hair’s thickness and response.
- Rinsing and blow-dry — The solution is rinsed out and hair is blow-dried straight to prepare for the next step.
- Flat-ironing — Your stylist methodically straightens each section with a flat iron, sealing the new straight structure into the hair.
- Neutraliser (20–30 min) — A neutralising solution locks the straightness in permanently.
- Final rinse and styling — Hair is rinsed, conditioned, and styled. Your stylist will explain how to care for your rebonded hair at home.
Who is rebonding best for?
Rebonding delivers the most dramatic results for certain hair types. It’s ideal for:
- Very curly, wavy, or frizzy hair that’s difficult to manage in Singapore’s humidity
- Thick, coarse hair that doesn’t respond well to temporary straightening
- Anyone wanting permanent straightness without daily flat-ironing
- Low-maintenance styling — rebonded hair needs minimal daily effort to look sleek
When to consider an alternative
Rebonding isn’t the right choice for every situation. We’ll steer you toward a better option if:
- Your hair has been recently bleached or heavily lightened — the double chemical load can cause breakage. We may recommend a repair course first.
- You want to keep some natural texture or movement — keratin treatment smooths frizz while preserving body.
- Your hair is already very fine and flat — rebonding may remove volume you want to keep.
- You’ve had back-to-back chemical treatments recently — your hair needs recovery time between services.
How long does rebonding last?
Rebonding is permanent on the treated hair. The straight sections stay straight until you cut them off. New growth at the roots will come in with your natural texture, so most clients return for a root touch-up every 6–12 months.
How quickly you need a touch-up depends on your natural curl pattern and how visible the contrast is between straight ends and new growth. Tightly curly hair shows the line of demarcation sooner than wavy hair.
To keep your rebonded hair healthy between appointments, we recommend a Miin Express or Miin Signature treatment every 4–6 weeks. These rebuild moisture and strength that the chemical process depletes.
Aftercare: keeping your hair healthy and sleek
Rebonded hair is chemically processed, so aftercare is essential to maintain both the look and the health of your hair.
- Wait 72 hours before washing your hair — this is critical for the new shape to fully set
- Do not tie, clip, or pin your hair for the first 3 days — any crease can become permanent
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo and a rich, moisturising conditioner
- Apply a hair mask weekly to replenish moisture stripped during the process
- Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle — start from the ends and work upward
- Avoid heat styling where possible — your hair is already straight, so let the rebonding do the work
- Wait at least 2–3 weeks before colouring to avoid overloading the hair with chemicals
- Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction while sleeping
How long does the appointment take?
A rebonding appointment at Miin takes 3–5 hours depending on your hair’s length, thickness, and natural texture. Very thick or tightly curly hair may take longer. Your stylist will give you an accurate estimate during consultation so you can plan your visit.
