What are highlights?
Highlights use foils to isolate thin sections of hair and lighten them individually, creating multi-tonal dimension — lighter pieces woven through your base colour that catch light and add natural movement.
Unlike single-process colour that changes everything at once, highlights (highlight rambut) let you control exactly where lightness falls. For dark Asian hair, this is especially effective: strategically placed highlights add brightness, texture, and depth to dark hair.
At Miin Senopati, our Korean-trained stylists approach every highlight service with precision. Each foil placement complements your haircut, face shape, and how your hair falls naturally — so the result looks intentional but effortless.
Highlight styles we offer
We customise every highlight service. These are the most popular styles at our Senopati salon.
- Full highlights — Foils placed throughout the head for an all-over lifted, multi-dimensional look. Best if you want a noticeably lighter overall appearance with even tone distribution (warna highlight rambut).
- Partial highlights — Concentrated on the top layers and around the face. Adds brightness while keeping depth underneath — a popular option for clients wanting dimension without heavy commitment.
- Face-framing highlights — Light pieces focused around the hairline and temples to open up the face. Subtle, flattering, and low-maintenance with a soft grow-out.
- Short-hair highlights (highlight rambut pendek) — Highlights adapted for shorter hair lengths, with foil placement that adds texture and movement without overwhelming smaller proportions. Works well on bobs and layered cuts.
- Korean-style highlights (highlight rambut Korea) — Softer transitions between tones, using ash or beige palettes designed for Asian hair textures and warm skin tones.
- Highlight only (bleach / non-bleach) — Targeted highlight sections with either bleach or non-bleach formulas, depending on lift goals and hair condition.
Highlights on Asian hair: our approach
Asian hair is thicker and darker, so it lightens differently and tends to pull warm (orange or gold tones) during the process.
Our Korean-trained stylists know how to get clean, non-brassy results on dark hair — using gentle products, careful timing, and the right toner to land on your target shade.
The result is clean, natural-looking highlights — no brassiness, no orange streaks, just soft dimension that suits dark Asian hair beautifully. This is especially important in Jakarta's tropical climate, where UV exposure can shift undertones faster.
Highlights vs balayage
Both add multi-tonal colour, but the technique and result differ.
- Highlights — Applied with foils for precise, even lightening. Creates structured dimension with defined lighter pieces. Better for noticeable lift and clean placement.
- Balayage — Hand-painted freehand for a softer, graduated effect. Better for a natural, sun-kissed gradient with seamless grow-out.
What to expect during your appointment
A highlights appointment at Miin follows a structured process for precise, healthy results.
- Consultation — Your stylist discusses your goals, examines your hair history and condition, and maps out foil placement. Together you'll decide on style, density, and tone.
- Sectioning and foiling — Hair is sectioned precisely and lightener applied to selected strands, each wrapped in foil.
- Processing — Lightener develops under controlled timing. Your stylist monitors progress for even lift without over-processing.
- Toning — After rinsing, a toner refines the final shade — neutralising warmth and achieving the exact target tone discussed in consultation.
- Treatment and styling — A post-colour treatment restores moisture and locks in shine. Your stylist blow-dries and styles the finished result.
How often do highlights need maintenance?
Foil highlights typically need a refresh every 8–12 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows and how visible the regrowth contrast is.
Face-framing highlights and finer techniques grow out more gracefully because placement is softer. Full highlights with high contrast may show regrowth sooner, especially on very dark base colours.
Between appointments, use colour-safe sulphate-free shampoo to preserve tone and prevent brassiness. A Miin Express Treatment or Miin Hair Treatment every 4–6 weeks helps maintain the condition of lightened hair. Can I combine highlights with other services?
Yes. Highlights pair well with several services at Miin Senopati.
- Highlights + haircut — Cut and highlight in the same session, with foil placement tailored to your new shape.
- Highlights + Miin Hair Treatment — Recommended after lightening to rebuild strength and restore shine.
- Highlights + toner refresh — Between full sessions, a toner visit refreshes your shade and keeps brassiness in check.
