What is a digital perm?
A digital perm — also called a hot perm or setting perm — uses digitally controlled heated rods wrapped around the hair to create defined, lasting curls. Unlike cold perms that work at room temperature, heat processing creates stronger, longer-lasting curls. It is the most widely requested Korean perm for good reason.
The technique originated in Korea and Japan, where soft, voluminous curls are a cornerstone of modern styling. This Korean perm style uses signature variations like the S-curl and C-curl to give clients natural-looking movement rather than tight, uniform ringlets.
At Miin in Orchard, we use Korean digital perm methods refined by our stylists’ training in Seoul. The result is effortless, bouncy texture that looks like your hair naturally falls that way.
Popular digital perm styles
These are the most popular Korean digital perm curl patterns. Your stylist will recommend the right one during consultation based on your face shape, hair length, and the look you're after.

C-Curl perm
Gentle inward hook at the ends — the most natural everyday Korean wave. A C curl perm is perfect for bob to shoulder-length hair that needs polished shape without heavy volume. Frames the face with minimal styling effort.

S-Curl perm
Continuous wave pattern that flows down the hair shaft like the letter S. An S curl perm is best for medium to long hair — it gives flowing, romantic movement through the mid-lengths and ends.

Korean wave perm
Loose, relaxed waves with layered body — the signature K-drama look. Combines S-curl through the lengths with soft C-curl at the ends for effortless, romantic volume.

Cloud perm
All-over voluminous curls with a soft, airy finish. More curl intensity than a Korean wave — for clients who want visible bounce and movement from roots to ends.
- Many clients combine S-curls through the lengths and C-curls at the ends for layered dimension.
- Your stylist will recommend the right mix during consultation based on your face shape, hair density, and lifestyle.
Digital perm vs cold perm
Choosing between digital perm and cold perm depends on the curl style you want and how you prefer to style your hair day-to-day.
- Digital perm uses heat to create larger, looser curls. Curls look their best when dry and last 4–8 months. Better for medium to long hair.
- Cold perm uses a chemical solution at room temperature for tighter, springier curls. Looks more defined when wet and lasts 3–6 months. Works well on shorter lengths.
What to expect during your appointment
A digital perm at Miin follows a careful step-by-step process to protect your hair while building lasting curl structure.
- Consultation (15 min) — Your stylist examines your hair type, thickness, and damage history, then discusses the look you want. This is where we decide on curl pattern, placement, and rod size.
- Preparation — Hair is washed and sectioned. A scalp protector is applied to shield the scalp and minimise stress during processing.
- Rod wrapping — Hair is carefully wound around digital rods in the pattern mapped during consultation. Rod selection and wrapping angle determine your final curl shape.
- Heat processing (60–90 min) — The rods heat to set the curls. Your stylist adjusts temperature and timing based on your hair.
- Neutralising and setting — A neutralising solution locks the new curl pattern in place. Rods are removed and the hair is gently rinsed.
- Styling — Your stylist blow-dries and styles your new curls, showing you how to maintain the shape at home.
Who is digital perm best for?
Digital perm works across a range of hair types, but it’s especially suited to certain profiles.
- Straight, flat hair that lacks volume and movement
- Medium to long hair (shoulder length and beyond) — the weight helps curls fall naturally
- Fine to medium thickness — thick hair works too but may need longer processing time
- Hair that hasn’t been heavily bleached — healthy or lightly processed hair gives the best results
How long does a digital perm last?
On healthy, uncoloured hair, a digital perm typically lasts 4–8 months. The curls gradually loosen over time rather than disappearing suddenly.
Factors that affect longevity include hair health, thickness, aftercare routine, and whether you colour your hair after perming. Well-conditioned hair holds curls longer, and avoiding heat damage extends the life of your perm significantly.
To keep your curls in peak condition, we recommend a Miin Express or Miin Signature treatment every 4–6 weeks. These treatments restore strength and moisture from the inside, helping your perm maintain its shape and shine. A hair mask add-on keeps curls soft between perms.
Aftercare: keeping your curls lasting
Good aftercare makes the difference between curls that last a few months and curls that look great for most of a year.
- Wait 48–72 hours before washing your hair after the perm
- Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo — sulphates strip moisture and loosen curl structure
- Avoid products with sodium chloride, high alcohol content, or clarifying formulas
- Use a diffuser on low heat when blow-drying, or air-dry for the most natural result
- Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and frizz
- Book a moisturising treatment every 4–6 weeks to maintain hair health
- Avoid flat-ironing or straightening — this works against the curl pattern
How long does the appointment take?
A standard digital perm appointment at Miin takes around 3 hours. For longer or thicker hair, allow 3.5–4 hours. Your stylist will give you a more precise estimate during the initial consultation.
