What is organic hair colour?
Organic hair colour (also called ammonia-free or non-ammonia colour) uses plant-based and low-chemical formulations instead of traditional ammonia-based dyes. The result is the same even coverage and lasting colour, but with less scalp irritation, less chemical smell, and gentler processing.
At Miin, the organic upgrade replaces the colour formula used during your service — whether that's a root touch up, full colour, or any other colour service. Everything else stays the same: consultation, application technique, processing time, and finish.
How ammonia-free colour differs from standard colour
Both deliver lasting colour. The difference is how your scalp feels during and after the service.
- Standard colour — Uses ammonia. Effective and fast, but can cause scalp tingling, redness, or a strong chemical smell. Most professional colour lines use ammonia.
- Ammonia free hair dye — Replaces ammonia with gentler alternatives. Less scalp irritation, less smell, and a comparable colour result. Processing may take slightly longer in some cases.
Who should upgrade to organic colour
The organic upgrade is optional — standard colour works well for most clients. Consider upgrading if any of these apply.
- Sensitive scalp — If you've experienced tingling, redness, or discomfort during past colour services, ammonia-free formulations are noticeably gentler.
- Frequent colouring — Clients who colour every 4–6 weeks expose their scalp to chemicals regularly. Switching to a non ammonia hair colour reduces cumulative irritation over time.
- Scalp conditions — If you have eczema, psoriasis, or a generally reactive scalp, organic colour is the safer choice.
- Pregnancy or nursing — Many clients prefer ammonia-free colour during pregnancy for peace of mind. While standard salon colour is considered safe, the organic option eliminates ammonia exposure entirely.
- Smell sensitivity — Ammonia has a strong, sharp smell. The organic formula is nearly odourless, making the experience more comfortable.
- Personal preference — Some clients simply prefer a gentler product, even if they don't have a specific sensitivity. At Miin, we're an organic hair salon option in Singapore without requiring you to go to a specialist organic-only salon.
Coverage and colour results
A common concern is whether ammonia-free colour covers as well as standard colour. The short answer: yes, for most applications.
- Grey coverage — Our ammonia-free formula provides full grey coverage. If you're booking a root touch up with grey roots, the organic upgrade handles it.
- Tone range — Most natural and warm tones (browns, chocolates, coppers, soft blacks) work well with ammonia free hair color. Very light or fashion shades may still need standard colour for the required lift.
- Longevity — Colour lasts 4–6 weeks, same as standard. Ammonia-free colour can fade slightly faster on very resistant hair, but most clients won't notice a difference.
- Shine — Organic colour often leaves hair shinier because the gentler processing keeps the cuticle smoother. It's a natural hair color result that looks healthy.
