What is a Korean down perm?
A Korean down perm — known as 다운펌 in Korean salons — is a targeted chemical treatment that relaxes and flattens stiff, coarse hair in specific areas. It is not a curl perm — it does the opposite. The perming solution softens the hair, and pressure is applied to reshape it so the hair holds a flat, downward position.
The treatment is applied selectively to problem areas only — usually the sides and back of the head, where thick Asian hair tends to stick outward or puff up after a haircut. The top and fringe are left untouched so you can still style them freely.
The result is side hair that lies flat and smooth against the head, giving you a clean silhouette and a groomed look that holds without wax or daily effort. This side down perm technique is one of the most popular Korean men's grooming services we offer.
The problem down perm solves
If you have thick, coarse hair, you know the frustration: you get a fresh haircut, the sides look clean for a day or two, then the hair starts sticking outward as it grows. Wax and pomade help temporarily, but they melt in Singapore's heat and the puffiness returns by afternoon.
Down perm addresses this permanently. Instead of fighting your hair's natural growth direction every morning, the chemical treatment reshapes the hair so it naturally falls flat. It's particularly effective for:
- Side hair that sticks out after a haircut — the most common complaint
- Puffy, voluminous sides that make the head look wider than you want
- Stiff, wiry hair at the nape or back that won't sit smooth
- "Root floating" — hair lifting away from the scalp at the roots, especially after sleeping
What to expect during your appointment
Down perm is one of our quickest services — it adds about 30–45 minutes to a haircut appointment.
- Assessment — your stylist identifies which areas need treatment. Typically the sides and back; the top and fringe are left untouched for styling flexibility.
- Solution application (5–10 min) — a perming solution is applied only to the targeted areas to soften the hair.
- Pressing and setting (15–25 min) — the hair is pressed flat using end papers or combs, and held in position while the hair sets in its new shape.
- Neutraliser — a neutralising solution locks the hair in its flat position.
- Rinse and check — hair is rinsed and your stylist checks the result. The sides should sit smooth and stay down immediately.
Who is down perm for?
Down perm for men is by far the most common use case — down perm for short hair solves the problem of stiff sides sticking out, which is primarily a men's grooming issue. But the technique works for anyone with thick, stubborn hair that won't stay down.
- Men with thick, coarse Asian hair whose sides puff out or stick outward after a haircut
- Anyone wanting a cleaner silhouette — down perm slims the profile by removing side volume
- People who use heavy wax or pomade daily just to keep sides flat — down perm eliminates that routine
- Clients getting a Korean-style haircut (two-block, comma hair) where flat sides are essential to the look
How long does a down perm last?
Down perm results look sharpest for the first 4–6 weeks. The treated hair itself keeps its shape — but on short sides, new growth comes in fast, and even 1–2 cm of untreated regrowth changes the overall shape.
Most clients treat down perm as regular maintenance, refreshing it every 6–8 weeks alongside their haircut. If you get your hair cut monthly, adding a down perm every visit or every other visit keeps the sides consistently clean.
Why down perm matters in Singapore
Singapore's 80–90% humidity is one of the main reasons down perm is so popular here. Styling products break down faster in heat and humidity — wax melts, pomade loses hold, and carefully flattened sides puff back up by midday.
Down perm solves this at the chemical level. Because the change is permanent (not just a product coating), the flat shape holds regardless of humidity. Your sides stay down from morning to evening without reapplying product or restyling.
Aftercare
Down perm aftercare is minimal — it's one of the easiest services to maintain.
- Wait 24–48 hours before washing your hair
- Do not wear hats, headbands, or anything that presses against the treated areas for the first day
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo to preserve the treatment
- Blow-dry downward after washing — this reinforces the flat direction
- Avoid heavy waxes that can build up — a light styling cream is all you need
Pricing
Down perm at Miin is priced by area. Sides only: $48. Sides + back (entire): $78. The price is the same regardless of stylist tier. Most clients add down perm to their regular haircut appointment — the treatment adds approximately 30–45 minutes.
