Root Perm

Root perm adds volume and lift at the roots without curling the rest of your hair. At Miin in Senopati, our Korean-trained stylists use a cold wave Korean root perm technique — wrapping small perm rods at the base of your hair and setting them with a room-temperature solution. The result is a permanent blowout effect that lasts months, even in Jakarta’s humidity.

What is a root perm?

A root perm — or perm akar — is a targeted cold wave perming treatment that focuses only on the first 2–4 inches of hair near the scalp. Unlike a full digital perm or cold perm that creates curls throughout, a root perm adds only lift and body at the crown. The technique uses small perm rods and a room-temperature solution — no heat is involved.

The mid-lengths and ends are left untouched — they stay exactly as they are. The result is hair that stands up naturally from the scalp with bounce and volume, instead of lying flat. It looks like a really good blowout, except it lasts for months.

At Miin, our stylists select rod sizes and placement based on your scalp shape, hair density, and how much lift you want. Smaller rods create more lift; larger rods produce softer, more natural body.

Root perm vs full perm

Both use perm chemistry, but they target different results.

  • Root perm — treats only the first 2–4 inches at the roots. Adds lift and volume at the crown. No visible curls. Faster appointment, lower cost.
  • Digital perm / cold perm — treats the full length. Creates defined curls or waves throughout. Longer appointment, higher cost.

What to expect during your appointment

A root perm is shorter than a full perm because only the root area is treated.

  1. Consultation (10 min) — your stylist assesses your scalp shape, hair density, and growth direction. Together you decide how much lift you want and where it’s needed most.
  2. Preparation — hair is washed and sectioned. The mid-lengths and ends are kept away from the treatment zone.
  3. Rod wrapping — small perm rods are placed at the base of each section, wrapping only the first 2–4 inches of hair.
  4. Perm solution (15–20 min) — the perming solution is applied to the wrapped root sections only. Your stylist monitors timing based on your hair’s response.
  5. Neutraliser (10 min) — a neutralising solution locks the lift in place.
  6. Rinse and styling — rods are removed, hair is rinsed and styled. Your stylist shows you how to maintain the volume at home.

Who is root perm best for?

Root perm is one of the most underrated services we offer. It’s ideal for:

  • Fine or flat hair that collapses throughout the day — a root lift perm gives structural volume that lasts in Jakarta’s humidity
  • Anyone who blow-dries daily for volume — a root perm gives you the same lift without the effort
  • Clients who want volume without curls — a root volume perm adds body and bounce at the crown with no waves
  • As an add-on to a full perm — root perm ensures extra crown lift that a standard perm alone may not achieve
  • First-time perm clients who want to try something subtle before committing to full curls

When to consider an alternative

Root perm isn’t the best choice in every situation. We’ll suggest something different if:

  • You want curls or waves throughout — a digital perm or cold perm will give you that.
  • Your hair is heavily bleached or very damaged — even though only the roots are treated, the chemical process needs healthy hair to work safely.
  • Your hair is very short (less than 2 inches at the roots) — there’s not enough length to wrap around the rods.
  • You want smooth, frizz-free roots rather than volume — that’s a different service (volume smoothing straightens instead of lifting).
  • You want stronger, more directional root lift — a root iron perm uses a heated iron tool instead of rods, giving the stylist more precise control over lift direction and hold.

How long does a root perm last?

A root perm typically lasts 2–4 months. The perm itself doesn’t wash out — it grows out as new straight hair emerges from the scalp, gradually pushing the permed section further from the roots.

Because root perm uses rods, you may notice a slight crimp or ridge at the base of the treated area as it grows out. This is normal — a quick blow-dry or flat iron at the roots smooths it out. The effect is subtle and most clients don’t find it bothersome, but it’s worth knowing upfront. If you want a smoother grow-out with no rod marks, ask about root iron perm.

How quickly you need a refresh depends on your hair’s growth rate and how much lift you want to maintain. Most clients schedule a refresh every 2–3 months, often pairing it with a Miin Express Treatment or Miin Hair Treatment.

Root perm in Jakarta’s climate

This is one of the biggest advantages of a root perm in Jakarta. Blow-dried volume collapses within hours in tropical humidity. A root perm provides structural lift that resists humidity because the lift is chemically set.

The volume holds throughout the day without re-styling. In fact, humidity can actually help — permed hair tends to look slightly more voluminous in humid conditions compared to dry environments.

Aftercare

Root perm aftercare is straightforward since only the roots are treated.

  • Wait 48 hours before washing your hair
  • Do not tie or clip your hair for the first 2 days — avoid anything that presses the roots flat
  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo to preserve the perm
  • Avoid heavy conditioners or oils at the roots — they can weigh down the lift
  • When blow-drying, lift the roots with your fingers or a round brush to reinforce the volume direction
  • Wait at least 1–2 weeks before colouring

How long does the appointment take?

A root perm at Miin takes 1.5–2 hours — significantly shorter than a full perm. If you’re combining it with another perm service, add about 30–45 minutes to the total appointment time.

Frequently asked questions

Will a root perm make my hair look curly?

No. A root perm adds lift and volume at the roots only. Your mid-lengths and ends remain completely unchanged — no curls, just natural-looking body at the crown.

Can I combine root perm with a digital perm?

Yes, this is a popular combination. The digital perm creates curls from mid-length to ends, while the root perm ensures extra lift at the crown. Your stylist can do both in one appointment.

Is root perm less damaging than a full perm?

Yes. Only the first 2–4 inches of hair are chemically treated, so the rest of your hair avoids any exposure. It’s one of the gentlest perm options available.

How much does root perm cost at Miin Jakarta?

Root perm starts from 780k with an Indonesian Stylist. Korean Senior and Korean Master tiers are also available at 980k. See our services page for full pricing.

Does root perm work on fine hair?

Fine hair is actually the best candidate for a root perm. Fine hair lacks natural volume, and a root perm provides the structural lift that styling alone can’t sustain in Jakarta’s humidity.

How long does a root perm last?

Typically 2–4 months. The perm grows out as new hair comes in straight at the roots. Fine hair may lose the effect sooner; thicker hair holds longer.

What is the difference between root perm and root iron perm?

Root perm uses cold wave solution and small rods — it’s gentler, faster, and more affordable. Root iron perm uses a heated iron tool to shape each section by hand, giving stronger and more directional lift with a smoother grow-out (no rod crimp). Root iron perm costs more and takes a bit longer, but the stylist has more control over exactly where and how much lift you get.
